Wrestling Falls To VMI 23-18

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart wrestling team opened a stretch of four consecutive home dual matches Saturday with a 23-18 loss to the VMI Keydets at the Pitt Center.
The Pioneers got off to a shaky start as VMI won the first three matches to take a 12-0 lead in the dual. Brandon Levesque gave Sacred Heart its first points in exciting fashion in the 149-pound match. Trailing 5-2 against Emmitt Kelly heading into the third period, Levesque earned an escape and a takedown to force overtime at 5-5. Levesque then pinned Kelly 0:20 into overtime to give SHU six key points and cut VMI's lead in half.
The Keydets then won the next three matches, two by major decision, to take a commanding 23-6 lead. The Pioneers did rally back, starting with Mark Boyle's 10-4 win over Derek Thurman at 184 to make the score 23-9. Sasha Oliinyk pinned Taylor Thomas in the 197-pound bout to put the score at 23-15. In the final match of the dual, Duke Sherwood defeated Sivaatasi Mathias 3-1 to make the final score 23-18.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Saturday, January 16 when it hosts Buffalo at 7 p.m.
