Box Score MARLBORO, Ma – A second period surge propelled the Sacred Heart Women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over the Becker Hawks on Friday night. The victory snaps a three game losing streak, as the Pioneers move back to .500 at 8-8-2.
SHU dominated play, outshooting Becker 46-13 over the three periods, including 20-1 in the decisive three-goal second period. The Pioneers' special teams continue to be a bright spot on the season, going two-for-three on the power-play to bring its percentage to 19.2 for the season. The penalty-kill remained stingy, not allowing a goal on the only Becker opportunity as they have now killed off 86.7 percent of chances on the year.
In just the 18th game, Casey Stathopoulos broke the 20-point barrier with her team-high tenth assist of the season on the third Pioneer goal. After allowing a goal on just the second Becker shot of the game, senior Amanda Fontaine saved the final 11 shots she faced.
Michaela Martin opened the scoring just 4:16 in, but it was all Sacred Heart from there. Megan Finlay began the scoring for SHU with a power play goal at the 7:13 mark of the second, her fifth of the season. Katie Stueve earned her third assist on the play, while sophomore Cassandra Hanlon grabbed her fourth helper.
Less than two minutes later freshman Brooke McGreen scored her first career collegiate goal as a Pioneer unassisted. Defenseman Megan Ofner put an exclamation point on the scoring with her third goal of the season on the power play with 4:23 remaining. Taylor Moreland remained hot with an assist on the Ofner goal, her seventh of the year.
SHU will look to complete the weekend sweep at home tomorrow at the Sports Center of Connecticut at 4 pm.
