Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit to the Hofstra Pride in the final four minutes to win 90-86 Tuesday night at Coach Bike Court at the Pitt Center.
Sacred Heart (1-1) trailed Hofstra 83-74 with 4:05 to play. The Pioneers cut the deficit to seven on a Quincy McKnight layup at the 3:18 mark, making the score 85-78. Sean Hoehn kept the run going with back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game, 85-84, with 0:34.
Hoehn then had a steal on the Pride's next possession and was fouled. The sophomore headed to the foul line and knocked down both free throws to give SHU an 86-85 lead with 0:24 left. After forcing a Hofstra miss on the next trip down, McKnight made two free throws to make it a three-point game, 88-85, with 0:05 left. Hofstra's Deron Powers was fouled on the last-second three, but made just one of the three free throws as SHU made two last free throws to make the final score 90-86.
After trading buckets to start the game, Hofstra (1-1) used a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead at the 14:48 mark of the first half. The Pioneers responded with a 27-11 run to take a 31-22 lead at the 7:22 mark on a Joseph Lopez layup. Hofstra would come roaring back, ending the half on a 10-2 run in just over two minutes to take a 43-41 halftime lead. The Pride opened up its lead in the second half to nine, 62-53, on a Powers three at the 12:13 mark. SHU came back with a 14-2 run, sparked by seven points from Matej Buovac, to take a 67-64 lead with 8:45 to play. Hofstra had one last run in them as a Eli Pemberton's three at the 4:05 mark gave the Pride an 83-74 lead. SHU held Hofstra to one field goal the rest of the way on its way to the win.
SHU shot 49.3% for the game, including a 56% mark in the first half. McKnight set a new career-high in points for the second straight game, scoring 28 points. Lopez and Buovac each scored 14 points with Lopez adding a team-high seven rebounds. Hoehn and Charles Tucker Jr. added 12 points each.
Sacred Heart travels to the west coast for its next four games, beginning Friday, Nov. 18 with a 10:00 p.m. game at #9/10 Arizona.
First Half
- McKnight was 7-for-8 from the field in the first half for 15 points.
- Freshman Zach Radz scored his first career points on a three-pointer at the 11:39 mark, tying the game at 17-17.
- With the score tied at 19-19, a Tucker jumper started a 12-2 run over 3:23 to give SHU a 31-22 lead. Tucker, Lopez, and McKnight scored four points each in the run.
Second Half
- The Pioneers were 15-for-17 at the foul line in the second half, making their last 12 free throws.
- Hoehn scored eight straight points in 0:51 to give SHU the 86-85 lead with 0:24 left.
- SHU outscored Hofstra 16-3 in the final four minutes.
