Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Two-run home runs from Victor Sorrento and Dan Schock were not enough, as the Sacred Heart baseball team lost its season opener at Stephen F. Austin on Friday night, due in large part to a five-run Lumberjack sixth inning. SHU cut the deficit to two runs in the eighth inning and had the tying run on first base in the ninth inning, but were unable to ever comeback form the decisive five-run frame.
After SFA (3-3) opened the scoring by executing a double steal in the first, Schock put Sacred Heart ahead with his blast over the left field fence in the top of the third. Sorrento then doubled the lead in SHU's next at bat, also homering over the left field fence.
Finishing 3-4, Sorrento tied his career-high in hits and added three RBI's, driving in the eighth inning run with a two-out RBI single. Schock had his second career multi-hit game, ending 2-3 with two RBI's and a walk and scoring two runs for the second time in his career.
Sacred Heart starter
James Cooksey cruised through the first five innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits. Running into the trouble in the sixth, he finished with a final line of five earned runs allowed on five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked four.
Nick Morrissey came on in relief for his first appearance since 2014, striking out four in 2.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering three hits. Freshman
Brent Teller made his first career collegiate appearance, walking the first batter he faced before recording the final out of the eighth.
Zach Michener led the Stephen F. Austin going 3-4, but it was Garett McMullen providing the biggest hit of the evening, doubling down to the left field line to clear the bases in the fifth. Kyle Thornell went 2-3 with two runs and a walk.
The Lumberjack bullpen relieved starter Jarred Greene with three innings of one run ball, with Cole Ridgley earning the save after 1.1 scoreless innings. Green gave up four runs on five hits in six innings to earn the win.
The two teams play game two of a three game series tomorrow at 2 pm local time.
How it Happened
- Tyler Kendrick led the game off with a walk before advancing to second on a passed ball. He was unable to score on Thornell's one-out single, but came across home when Thornell drew a throw to second and got in a run down.
- After both teams went 1-2-3 in the second, Ted Shaw led off the third with a double, ecentually scoring on Schock's homer.
- Cooksey was able to work around a leadoff runner reaching on an error in the third and Sorrento would double the lead in the fourth, bringing in Zack Short, who led off with a walk.
- Thornell led off the fourth with a walk and moved up to second on a single from Michener. Cooksey induced a ground ball to get one out at second, but Thornell came around to score on an error when SHU attempted to turn a double play. With runners on first and third, Cooksey was able to get yet another ground ball, which the Pioneers turned into a double play.
- He worked around another error in the fifth, stranding a runner at second with one out.
- SHU had two singles in the sixth, but both runners were caught stealing.
- Cooksey was able to get the first out, but four straight Lumberjacks then reached, beginning with doubles from Thornell and Michener. Following a Connor Filkes walk, McMullen delivered the go-ahead double to end Cooksey's day. Morrissey came on to strike out the first batter he faced, but he would walk the next to set up an RBI situation for pinch hitter Zach Valenzuela, who came through the eventual game-winning single to make the score 6-4. Kendrick then added more insurance with yet another single.
- Morrissey worked around a one out double in the seventh.
- Schock led off the eighth with a single and Jesus Medina followed with a one-out single to move Schock to second. With two outs, Sorrento cut into the lead with an RBI single to right field before advancing to second on a throwing error. With the game-tying runner in scoring position, Ridgley came on to get the final out.
- Alex Perry attempted to start a ninth inning rally with a two-out infield single. Schock then continued it with a walk to put the tying run on base, but again Ridgley bared down to end the inning, threat and the game on a ground out.
