Pioneers Split with UMass Lowell in Home Opener

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (March 30, 2016)—After dropping the first game, a one-out rally in the third inning led the Sacred Heart softball team to a 3-1 victory over UMass Lowell in game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader. Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) went 4-7 at the plate through two games scoring one run and knocking in two as SHU moved to 8-17 on the season.

 

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday when they host Bryant in the Northeast Conference opener. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.

Game 1:

For the Foes:

  • Starter Kaysee Talcik allowed just four hits while holding the Pioneers scoreless. The rookie pitcher stranded nine Pioneer runners on base to get her second win of the season
 

How it happened:

  • The Pioneers put runners in scoring position in three innings, but failed to push one across the plate stranding nine runners
  • UMass Lowell threated in the first pushing the leadoff batter to third, but starting pitcher Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) got the next three batters out to get out of the jam
  • The junior couldn't get out of the next one in the second as the River Hawks put one on the board as Kate Mims knocked home Sydney Barker, who reached on a double to right field
  • As SHU was held scoreless, UMass Lowell tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth as a lead off walk came back to bite Carlson
 

Game 2:

Highlights:

  • Orosco tied a career-best 12 strikeouts giving up just one run on three hits en route to her third win of the season
  • Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) went 3-3 with a triple and two RBI
  • Stephanie Appelberg (Monroe, Conn.) went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI in the third
 

For the Foes:

  • Tori Alcorn went 1-2 with a double, reach third base both times on
 

How it happened:

  • After threatening in the first inning, the River Hawks struck first capitalizing on two walks in the top of the second inning before getting a run on Alisha Welch's single
  • That was all they would get as Orosco tied a career-high 12 strike outs in the complete game
  • The Pioneer came alive in the third inning putting two runs on the board on three hits. With one out, Lauren Delgadillo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) hit a single to center to get things going. Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) followed it up with a triple to the right field fence sending the sophomore home. Stephanie Appelberg (Monroe, Conn.) drove SHU's third straight hit through the left side sending Desrosiers across the plate for the lead
  • SHU got one more run in the fifth as Desrosiers picked up her fourth hit and second RBI of the day
