Box Score LAFAYETTE, La. – Baylor Sundahl went 3.2 innings without giving up an earned run in Sacred Heart's 4-0 loss to 16th ranked Louisiana on Sunday afternoon. The win completed the Ragin Cajuns' sweep of the Pioneers, who drop their sixth straight game to open the 2016 campaign.
Sundahl, Alex Perry and starter John Sostarich held the Louisiana (8-4) offense to just eight hits and two earned runs, but the SHU offense could not solve Ragin Cajun starter Nick Lee, who went six innings allowing just three hits while striking out six. Jevin Huval and Eric Carter than went a combined 1.2 scoreless before giving way to Dylan Moore, who earned his second save with 1.1 perfect innings.
Despite just four hits, back-to-back errors with one out gave SHU an opportunity to tie it in top of the eighth. Jayson Sullivan and Ted Shaw stole second and third, respectively, on a called third strike to give the Pioneers two runners in scoring position. In came Moore, who slammed the door shut by inducing a ground out. He would then work a 1-2-3 ninth.
Sullivan had two of Sacred Heart's four hits, doubling twice to finish the three-game series 5-12 with three doubles. Keith Klebart and Jake Friar had SHU's two other hits.
Sundahl gave up just two hits in his 3.2 inning of work, operating around three walks. Sostarich went the first four, scattering six hits that led to two earned runs, one each in the second and third. That would prove to be plenty for Louisiana, who would add two unearned runs in the eighth. Alex Perry got retired the lone batter he faced.
After escaping trouble in the first, Sostarich could not remain unblemished in the second, as Ishmael Edwards reached scoring position by singling with one out and stealing second. Brad Antchak singled him home for the afternoon's first run. The Ragin Cajuns added to the lead when Alex Pinero doubled with two outs in the third, bringing in Stefan Trosclari, who had singled with one out.
Edwards and Antchak each went 2-3. Edwards also walked twice and scored two runs.
Sacred Heart's road trip continues on Tuesday, as the Pioneers will cross over the state border into Mississippi to take on Alcorn State for a single midweek game at 5 pm ET.
How it Happened
- Following a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, Louisiana threated with a two out rally in the bottom half as Stefan Trosclair walked and Dylon Poncho singled, but Sostarich escaped his first threat with a pop up.
- Friar singled to lead off the top of the third but was forced out at second on Shaw's fielder's choice. Shaw then was thrown out stealing second, which proved to be costly when Sullivan doubled with two outs.
- Edwards led off with a single in the bottom of the fourth and stole second and third, only to be stranded.
- Working in his first inning, Sundahl hit the first batter he faced, Trosclair, who then stole second. He was moved up to third on a ground out but Sundahl left him there to complete his first inning of work unscathed.
- Sullivan's second double came with one out in the sixth, but again SHU could not capitalize.
- Sundahl again let the first hitter of the inning reach in the sixth, this time on a walk, and he was then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sundahl hit another batter after getting the second out, but again he was able to work his way out of the jam.
- Klebart got into scoring position in the seventh by singling with two outs and moving up to second on a wild pitch, but Huval completed his first inning of work with a strikeout.
- Sundahl completed his afternoon with his first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.
- Louisiana's two unearned runs in the eighth came as the result of two Pioneer errors, both of which were by the pitcher. The first one came after Antchak had singled to move Edwards up to third with one out, who then came in on a throwing error. Friar then threw out a stealing runner for what would have ben the third, but Joe Robbins took advantage by driving in the final run of the series with an RBI single.
