Taubl Extends Streak in Shutout of Yale

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – James Taubl extended his streak of not allowing an earned run to 21.1 innings before four relievers each threw one scoreless frame in Sacred Heart's second shutout of Yale in two weeks. The offense provided 12 hits that led to seven runs, highlighted by perfect days at the plate for Zack Short and Dan Schock, as the Pioneers move back over .500 to 14-13 with their second straight win.

Taubl has now gone three consecutive starts without giving up an earned run, with two scoreless relief outings sandwiched in between. This afternoon he surrendered just three hits in five innings as just two runners reached scoring position, both in the second inning. That was the lone jam he faced, with back-to-back base hits putting Bulldogs on second and third with two outs. The sophomore answered the lone dilemma, inducing a groundout to keep the streak in tact. The only blemish in his final three frames was a leadoff single in the fourth.

Alex Perry also worked around two runners reaching in the sixth before Brent Teller allowed one hit in his scoreless seventh. Baylor Sundahl pitched a perfect eighth and Mike Lembo cemented the shutout by getting out of a bases load jam in the ninth.  Although three runners reached on a strikeout and wild pitch, walk, and hit by pitch, Lembo had three punchouts in the frame and did not give up a hit. The scoreless outing was the fifth in a row for Lembo, while Perry and Sundahl have now provided four straight scoreless appearances.

After failing to capitalize on doubles in both the second and third innings, SHU finally broke through in the fourth thanks to consecutive extra base hits from Victor Sorrento and Short. Short followed Sorrento's lead off double with a triple to center field for the first run of the afternoon. Keith Klebart's ground out in the next bat then quickly doubled the lead.

Sacred Heart finally broke the game open with a four-run sixth, taking advantage of small ball and a Yale error in addition to three base knocks. Again it was Short and Klebart involved as Short led off with a double and Klebart drew a base on balls. Jake Friar attempted to sacrifice them over and did so successfully, but was safe when the pitcher failed to field it cleanly, knocking the ball into foul territory to allow Short to score and Klebart to move up to third. Following a Schock RBI single, Anthony Capozziello sacrificed him and Friar to second and third, respectively. This permitted Ted Shaw's fly out to score Friar, and after a passed ball sent Schock to third, Medina put an en end to the flurry with an infield single.

Sorrento and Short combined for SHU's last run in the seventh, with Sorrento doubling for a second time before crossing home on Short's single. That capped a 4-4 day, the fourth such performance for the junior in his career, in which he also scored twice and drove in two more. Schock also reached base four times, recording the first three-hit game of his career and adding a walk. Medina made it four Pioneers with multi-hit efforts, as he finished 2-4.

Tim DeGraw and Richard Slenker had two hits apiece for Yale, with DeGraw also drawing a base on balls. Benny Wanger was tabbed with the loss after allowing four earned on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Tyler Duncan threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings after relieving Sam Boies following Short's double.

Sacred Heart returns to Northeast Conference play this Friday, hosting in-state rival Central Connecticut State 5:30 pm in game one of a four game series at Harbor Yard.
