Fairfield, Conn. (April 17, 2016) – The Sacred Heart softball team split a pair of conference games with Robert Morris University on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park. Game one went to the Colonials by a score of 3-1 before the Pioneers returned the favor in game two winning 3-1.

In game one, Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) gave up two homeruns to the Colonials and that was all they needed to take care of the Pioneers in game one. Lauren Hackett hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Haileigh Stocks hit a solo shot in the fourth. Fallon Bevino (Milford, Conn.) doubled down the left field line, advanced when Stephanie Appelberg (Monroe, Conn.) grounded out to the shortstop, and scored on a throwing error by the first baseman, but that was all SHU could muster.

Game two belonged to Emily Orosco, (Camarillo, Calif.). The freshman shined all day scattering four hits and giving up a lone run to Robert Morris, which came on a RBI single in the third by Hackett that scored Jordan Gurganus. The Pioneers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Hannah Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) led off with a double and scored when Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.) grounded out to the pitcher. The Pioneers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a Ford two-run single that scored Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.J.) and McKenna Wiegand (Gilbert, Ariz.).

The Pioneers return to action Tuesday as they travel across town for a game against rival Fairfield University. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.

GAME 1: SACRED HEART vs. ROBERT MORRIS

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Gurganus led off the game with a triple and then scored when Hackett hit a two-run homerun over the left field wall 
• Bevino led off the bottom of the second with a double, advanced on an Appelberg groundout, and then scored on a throwing error to third by the first baseman
• The Colonials got another run in the fourth on a solo homerun by Stocks

HIGHLIGHTS:

• Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) led the Pioneers with two hits

FOR THE FOES:

• Hackett had a two-run homerun in the first inning
• Stocks hit a solo homerun in the fourth for the Colonials
• Kaitlin Ellzy and Laura Coulter combined to give up six hits and one unearned run

GAME 2: SACRED HEART vs. ROBERT MORRIS

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Gurganus doubled to left center and scored on the next play when Hackett hit an RBI single up the middle in the top half of the third
• Ford helped the Pioneers even the score when she doubled to lead off the bottom of the third and scored on the throw when Fillmore grounded out to the pitcher
• D'Addario tripled down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Wiegand walked, and then both scored on a Ford's single to left center to put the Pioneers up 3-1

HIGHLIGHTS:

• Orosco got the win as she went the distance giving up just four hits and one run
• D'Addario had two hits including a triple
• Ford also had two hits for the Pioneers including a two-run single that put Sacred Heart on top for good in the fourth inning
