Orosco Blanks Bulldogs in NEC Opener

Fairfield, CT (April 2, 2016) – The Sacred Heart softball team split their Northeast Conference opening doubleheader with Bryant on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park. After a short rain delay, the Pioneers lost game one 1-0 before taking game two by the same score.

 

In game one, Sacred Heart wasn't able to do much offensively only managing three hits. Starting pitcher Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) went the distance striking out eight while scattering five hits. One of the five hits came from the opposing pitcher, Elle Madsen, who doubled in the fourth and then scored on a Maritza Martinez single.

 

Game two was a hard fought win as the Pioneers got outhit, but grinded out a run in the first which was all they needed. Leadoff hitter Lauren Delgadillo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) singled, advanced on a sac bunt by Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.), reached third on a passed ball, and then scored on another pass ball.

GAME 1: SACRED HEART vs. BRYANT

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bryant starting pitcher Madsen helped herself out in the fourth inning as she doubled and then scored on Martinez's single 
  • Madsen held the Pioneers to just three hits

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Carlson had eight strikeouts for the Pioneers
  • McKenna Wiegand (Gilbert, Ariz.) led Sacred Heart offensively with two of the three hits

 

FOR THE FOES:

  • Madsen pitched a complete game three-hitter for the Bulldogs
  • Martinez scored Madsen in the fourth on an RBI single through the left side of the infield

 

GAME 2: SACRED HEART vs. BRYANT

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Delgadillo led off the game with a single, advanced on a Desrosiers sacrifice bunt, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball
  • Starting pitcher Emily Orosco (Camarillo, CA) went the distance while striking out eight and stranding the Bulldogs with the bases load in the sixth

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Delgadillo scored the only run of the game on a passed ball
  • Orosco struckout eight while stranding seven

 

FOR THE FOES:

  • Starting pitcher Colby Norris went the distance for the Bulldogs scattering four hits
