Softball Drops 1-0 Decision at Quinnipiac

Box Score

HAMDEN, CONN. (April 28, 2016)—A staff of three SHU pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters as the Sacred Heart softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to Quinnipiac Thursday afternoon falling to 13-31-2 on the season.

The Pioneers get back to NEC action this weekend when they travel to LIU Brooklyn Saturday, before closing out the 2016 season at Central Connecticut on Sunday.

How It Happened:

  • The Pioneers were held to just four base runners throughout the game, and were unable to score despite putting four in scoring position
  • It all started with Lauren Delgadillo's (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) lead off single in the first inning. The sophomore moved to third as Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) reached on an error behind her, but she was stranded there as Casey Herzog got the next three batters out
  • The Bobcats also threatened in the bottom half of the inning putting runners on first and second, but SHU starter Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) got Taylor Troyan to swing at strike three to get out of the jam. The junior ace struck out the side 1-2-3 in the second inning, and held Quinnipiac scoreless in the third before Emily Orosco (Camarillo, Calif.) took over in the circle
  • Sacred Heart managed to put at least one runner on in each of the first four innings, but went down in order in the fifth and sixth, as Orosco worked to preserve the 0-0 tie striking out four batters through two innings of work
  • Despite Carina Zupa's (Glen Cove, N.Y.) double in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers were unable to score
  • Ultimately, the Bobcats worked Kristen McCann (Phoenix, Ariz.) for the walk-off. In the bottom of the seventh, the rookie got lead-off pinch-hitter Erin Larseon to strikeout, before Miranda Magana singled up the middle. Magana advanced to third as Sydney Robey doubled down the left field line behind her. A walk issued to Keilani Finley loaded the bases for Dani Edmands, who came in as a pinch hitter. Edmands grounded out to second base allowing Magana to score the game-winner

Highlights:

  • Carlson, Orosco and McCann combined to strike out 11 batters. The junior started led the way with five, and Orosco and McCann struck out four and two respectively
  • Delgadillo was the only Pioneer to reach base twice in the game going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in her first two at-bats

For the Foes:

  • Herzog got the win for the Bobcats after allowing just three hits through six scoreless innings of work
  • Magana went 3-for-3, singling three times, including in the seventh when she came around to score
