Pioneers Rally in Seventh to Win Final Non-Conference Game at Iona

Box Score

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Leading throughout much of the afternoon following a two-run second inning, the Sacred Heart baseball team had to rally with two runs in the seventh for a 4-3 victory, overcoming a three-run Iona sixth in its last non-conference matchup of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The result snapped a four game skid for the Pioneers, who head into the final weekend of the season at 28-23, two wins shy of their third 30-win season in the last six years.

Pinch-hitter PJ DeFilippo got the seventh inning started with a single and Keith Klebart followed with one of his own for his third base knock of the game. Anthony Capozziello sacrificed the two to second and third, and after Iona reliever Andrew Camiolo came on and retired the first batter he faced on a pop up, Jesus Medina delivered the eventual game-winning double to left field on a 3-2 pitch.

Working his second and third innings of relief, Baylor Sundahl pitched a perfect seventh and eighth to keep the lead in tact and set up a save opportunity for James Cooksey. Cooksey came through with a perfect frame of his own, striking out the final two hitters for his team-leading fourth save of the season, double the total of any other Pioneer. Earning the victory, Sundahl moves to an even 3-3 with three innings of one-run ball. He gave up the run on two hits in the sixth before retiring the final seven he faced.

For the aforementioned Klebart, it was his second three-hit game this season and the fourth of his career. In addition to coming in as the game-winning run, he added an RBI single in the two-run second. That single scored Alex Perry, who had just opened the scoring with a single of his own in the prior at bat before making a heads up play to advance to second on the throw home.

Zack Short sparked the second inning with a one out double. He was one of two Pioneers with an extra base hit on the day, joining Medina, who finished 2-4 and along with Klebart were the only Pioneers to reach base twice.

The SHU pitching staff looked as if it would make the two runs hold up early as it went for its tenth shutout of the season. The Pioneers got through the first five innings unscathed, beginning with starter Jason Foley's three frames of two-hit ball.. Perry then threw a scoreless fourth before Jackson Aldam tossed a perfect fifth in which he struck out two.

Iona (10-37) finally came alive in the sixth as Matt Bryne opened the inning with a double and Sean Breen cut the deficit in half by driving him in with a single. Sacred Heart reliever Mike Lembo, who had come out for Aldam to begin the frame, was forced to leave the game with an injury and in came Sundahl.

Sundahl struggled early, throwing a wild pitch before surrendering an infield single to the first batter he faced, Travis Mistretta. Mistretta then stole second to give Iona runners on second and third with zero out. Carmine Palummo tied the game with a ground out, and following a strikeout for the second out, Lou Matarazzo gave the Gaels a 3-2 advantage with a second infield single of the inning. That would be the final blemish against the freshman hurler.

Sacred Heart concludes its regular season with a four-game series against LIU Brooklyn at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. With a 17-10 mark in Northeast Conference play, the Pioneers have already clinched the two seed in the upcoming 2016 NEC Tournament, which begins on May 26 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn.
