Box Score The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team had a huge weekend defeating St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn improving their record to 8-6 (2-0). The Pioneers impressively defeated the blackbirds of LIU in four sets. The last time the team defeated LIU was in 2011. Sacred Heart sits on top of the NEC rankings tied with Central Connecticut State, and Bryant.
Set 1- The Pioneers were off to a good start leading the Blackbirds 11-5 in the opening set but ran into a minor speed bump where LIU collected the next 9 of 11 points taking the lead 13-14. Lea Lieb then tallied two aces, and kills were added from Allison Riggs, and Maddie Losure to give the Pioneers the lead at 19-14. The set then sat at 23-16 in favor of SHU, until the Blackbirds came back to win with 9 straight points to take the set 23-25.
Set 2- After dropping a heartbreaking first set, the Pioneers were all positive from here on out. The teams were back and forth for the most of the second set being tied 10-10. After a kill from Makayla Dole, Lea Lieb added four serves and four SHU points, one being a service ace. The Pioneers closed the match with a kill from Allison Riggs to win the set 25-21.
Set 3- The third set was back and forth between the two teams changing leads 4 times. Senior Sarah Krufka lead the Pioneers in the third set adding 6 kills, one of them being the closing kill to win the set 25-20.
Set 4- The last set of the night was a very close competition, being tied at 18-18. The Pioneers were able to win the match by a score of 25-23. In the closing points Liisel Nelis added 2 service aces to close the match for a win.
