Pioneers Win Fourth Straight Over CCSU On Senior Day

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart men's basketball team won its fourth straight game Saturday afternoon at Coach Bike Court at the Pitt Center, beating the Central Connecticut Blue Devils 77-62 on Senior Day.

Prior to tipoff Saturday, SHU honored seniors Matej Buovac and Cole Walton. Buovac finished with 13 points, making three three-pointers. Sean Hoehn led all scorers with 17 points, making five three-pointers. Quincy McKnight added 11 points, three assists and two steals. 

 

FIRST HALF

- After a SHU 3 to open the game, Central Connecticut (5-20, 3-11 NEC) went on an 8-0 run over 3:18 to go up five at the 16:13 mark. 

- Sacred Heart (12-15, 7-7 NEC)  came back with a 7-2 run to tie the game 10-10 on a Sean Hoehn three-pointer with 13:59 to play.

- CCSU led 12-10 with 13:31 to play when a Barnett layup sparked a 14-4 run that gave the Pioneers a 24-16 lead at the 8:58 mark. Buovac and Lopez scored nine of the 14 points as SHU took its largest lead of the game up to that point.

- Chris Robinson's three-pointer at the 6:42 mark sparked a 9-0 SHU run that put the Pioneers ahead by 13, 33-20, with 4:06 to play in the half. 

- SHU shot 45.5% from the three-point line in the half, and held the Blue Devils to 14.3%. The Pioneers also made 12 of 14 free throws.

- Seven different Pioneers scored in the first half, with Barnett and Hoehn each scoring eight points.

SECOND HALF

- Matasovic scored SHU's first seven points in the second half, putting the Pioneers ahead 46-34 on a layup from McKnight at the 17:30 mark.

- SHU used a 10-2 run over 3:29 to take a 52-36 lead with 14:52 to play. McKnight and Charles Tucker Jr. made back-to-back threes to close the run.

- CCSU responded with a 6-0 run to close the deficit to 10, 52-42, at the 12:36 mark. 

- The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game with 1:40 to play, when a Shawn Montague free throw put SHU up 17, 74-57.

 

The Pioneers shot 47.1% from the field, holding CCSU to 43.1%. The Pioneers made a season-high 13 three-pointers and shot 56.5% from the arc. SHU also shot 84.2% at the foul line. Mustafa Jones led the Blue Devils with 14 points and six rebounds. Austin Nehls and Khalen Cumberlander both added 12 points.

SHU plays its final regular season home game on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. when the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights come to the Pitt Center.
