Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team used a five-goal fourth quarter to pull away and win 13-5 over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday.
Senior attack Bryce Jurk had a career-high six goals and eight points in the win. Joe Saggese also had a career-high in points with six, scoring three goals with three assists. Ryan O'Donoghue and Chase Godfrey each had three caused turnovers. Godfrey added five groundballs and an assist. Brooks Dutton made 10 saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (6-3, 2-1 NEC) got off to a strong start as goals by Julian Garritano, Brian Masi, and Saggese put the Pioneers up 3-0 at the 7:11 mark of the opening quarter. Mount St. Mary's got on the board with 4:59 to go on a Jack Mangan goal, but Jurk responded with his first goal 0:58 later to make the score 4-1. The Mountaineers then got back-to-back goals from Chris DiPretoro and Bubba Johnson to get within one, 4-3, with 7:13 to play in the second quarter. The Pioneers closed the half with another three-goal run, with tallies from Saggese, Jurk, and Max Tuttle giving SHU a 7-3 halftime lead.
Mount St. Mary's (3-6, 1-2 NEC) opened the second half with goals from DiPretoro and Ryan Lamon to get back within two, 7-5, with 4:20 to play in the third quarter. The SHU defense then put the clamps down, holding the Mountaineers scoreless for the final 19:20. The Pioneers forced 11 turnovers in the second half with Dutton making six saves. Sacred Heart closed the game on a 6-0 run, outscoring Mount St. Mary's 5-0 in the fourth quarter. Jurk scored three goals in the fourth quarter, as Saggese and Masi also found the back of the net in the final period.
SHU outshot Mount St. Mary's 49-32, including a 29-15 edge in the first half. The Pioneers also held a 33-25 edge in groundballs and a 13-8 advantage in faceoffs. DiPretoro led the Mountaineers with two goals. Goalie Matt Vierheller had 15 saves and six groundballs.
The Pioneers are back on the road next Saturday, April 8, at Bryant. Opening faceoff is at 1 p.m.
