Pioneers Battle Back to Defeat Yale on Tuesday Afternoon

NEW HAVEN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart baseball team overcame a five-run deficit to defeat Yale University, 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon. Timely two-out hitting paced the Pioneers (8-22) as they rallied with seven runs over the final five frames to down the Bulldogs (16-13) at Yale Field.

Four Pioneers recorded multi-hit games on the afternoon, led by freshman Austin Markmann who went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Freshmen Elijah Brown, Kevin Czapelski and junior Alex Perry all had two hits. Brown recorded a season-high three walks to go along with two runs scored and a double. Senior Ted Shaw led the Pioneers with two runs batted in. 

Yale threatened early as they loaded the bases off three walks by Pioneers starter Franklin Miller in the bottom of the second inning. With one man out, leadoff hitter Tim DeGraw lifted the sacrifice fly to center field to bring in the first run of the game. After another walk to load the bases, Richard Slenker earned the hit by pitch RBI to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.The Pioneers would get one run back in the top of the third as Brown picked up the two-out double. He would score on Perry's single to center field to cut the deficit to 2-1.  

The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI walk by Tom Ruddy and on a fielder's choice by Tom Fuller that allowed Griffin Dey to score from second base on an error by Brown. Yale pushed the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as they added another run on a sacrifice fly by Brian Ronai.   

SHU was poised to comeback as Brown picked up another two-out single off Mikey Sliepka in the fifth. Perry followed that up with a single to third base to move Brown into scoring position. Up to the plate stepped junior Anthony Capozziello, who delivered a RBI single to right field to score Brown. After a pitching change, freshman Kevin Czapelski laced an RBI single to short to keep the inning alive. Shaw followed that up with a two RBI double off Tyler Duncan to bring the score to 6-5. 

Sophomore Hal Shaw and held the Bulldog bat's in check only allowing one run in three innings of middle relief. The Pioneers continued to battle as they the top of the eighth with a leadoff walk by Shaw. Markmann followed that up with a single to right center field pushing Shaw to third base. Shaw scored the tying run on wild pitch by Drew Scott. Markmann advanced to third on passed ball on the strikeout by junior Dan Schock. Another wild pitch by Scott allowed Markmann to score the go ahead run for the Pioneers. Junior Cody Doyle and Brown both picked up walks and advanced on a wild pitch by Sam Boies. With runners in scoring position, Perry reached on an error by the third baseman Slenker to bring in Doyle and give SHU the 8-6 lead.

SHU's two-out magic continued in the ninth as Markmann picked up a two-out double to left field. He advanced to third on another wild pitch by Bois. DeFilippo added a RBI single to left field to bring the score to 9-6. Markmann sealed the deal a 1-2-3 ninth inning on the bump to earn his first collegiate win and end the Pioneers eight game losing streak.

The Pioneers head back into NEC play as they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson to Harbor Yard for a four-game series beginning Thursday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m.
