Pioneers Fall 11-5 to Stony Brook in Series Finale

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—The high powered Stony Brook University offense plated 11 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Sacred Heart baseball team, 11-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves (15-14) picked up the series sweep over the Pioneers (7-22) in the home opener at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Stony Brook opened the game with a two-run second inning on the sacrifice fly by Michael Wilson and RBI single by Brandon Janofsky that took a favorable bounce in the infield lip. Wilson continued his fine afternoon in the third as he added a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0. Stony Brook continued to get after Pioneers starter Baylor Sundahl in the fourth inning as Bobby Honeyman roped a two-RBI triple to right center field. Andruw Gazzolla followed that up with an RBI double to right center field to end Sundahl's afternoon.

SHU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as junior Anthony Capozziello scored on a wild pitch by Stony Brook starter Bret Clarke. The Seawolves extended their cushion in the top of the fifth as Wilson scored on a wild pitch by junior Ethan Lonardelli. Two batters later, Dylan Resk smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence to take the 8-1 lead.

The Pioneers pestered in the sixth as senior Keith Klebart started off the inning with a single. Capozziello then laced a single to center field, a miscue by centerfielder Toby Handley allowed Klebart to score after reaching third base. Freshman Austin Markmann extended his hitting streak to five games with his RBI single to right field to score Capozziello.

Stony Brook added one more in the top of the eighth on the pinch-hit home run by Dan McEvoy. The Pioneers picked up two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Shaw smacked his first triple of the season to deep center field to score Capozziello who reached earlier on a walk. Markmann knocked home Shaw on the RBI groundout to bring the game to the eventual final score of 11-5.

Sundahl dropped the decision, allowing a season-high five walks and seven earned runs. Redshirt sophomore Nick Rubino allowed just one run on three hits in two and a third innings in relief. Clarke allowed just one earned run in seven innings while striking out nine Pioneers.

Shaw led the Pioneers at the plate with his 2-for-3 showing at the plate. He extends his consecutive hits streak to six games and has reached base safely in the last 11 games. Capozziello set a new career-high with three runs scored.

The Pioneers look to get back on track as they travel up to New Haven on Tuesday, April 11 to take on Yale at 3:30 p.m.
