
Women's Rugby Opens Season with 84-10 Win Over Castleton

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart women's rugby opened its third season as a NCAA varsity program with an 84-10 win against Castleton University on Friday afternoon at Park Ave. Field.
The Pioneers picked up the highest point total in program history for a single game with 14 tries and seven successful kicks on the day. Junior Margaret Woods got the scoring going for the Pioneers with her try at 16:25 into the opening period. SHU proceeded to put on a 32-0 run before the Spartans got on the board in the second period. The Pioneers cruised to a 54-5 margin over the remainder of the game. Sophomore Kaylee Hale was stellar on kicks for the Pioneers with her seven makes on the afternoon.
The Pioneers look to carry the momentum over to next week as they continue homestand next Saturday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. against Molloy College.
Noteworthy
- The Pioneers seven freshmen had a successful day on the pitch, accumulating nine tries in their first collegiate game. (Grace DePourtere, Kaitlin Lagase, LeAnn Bauer, Isabel Cuddy and Tessa Buckey.)
- SHU had a successful first period as Woods, De Pourtere, Lagase, Cuddy and Bauer all netted tries.
- Lagase led the Pioneers with four tries in her first collegiate match.
- Cuddy was second with her three tries.
- The previous highest point total was 63 points in the spring of 2016 in a sevens matchup.
