Orosco Records 15 Strikeouts In Game Two as SHU Splits Home Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— After an extra-innings loss in game one, the Sacred Heart University softball team battled back in game two to split the 2018 home opener at Pioneer Park on Saturday afternoon. 

The Riverhawks (5-15) broke the tie with two runs in the eighth inning to take game one 3-1. A four-run second inning and a 15-strikeout performance by Emily Orosco gave the Pioneers (15-9) the 4-1 win in game two.

Game One – UMass-Lowell 3, SHU 1

The Scoring…

Top of the 4th inning… UMass-Lowell broke open the scoring in the fourth inning as Courtney Cashman led off the inning with a double. She later scored on a wild pitch by junior Kristen McCann

Bottom of the 5th inning… The Pioneers loaded up the bases with one-out in the inning. Stephanie Mangiameli brought in the lone run with an RBI groundout to second.

Top of the 8th inning… The Riverhawks got a runner in scoring position with one out in the extra inning. Cashman then ripped her second double of the game, picking up the RBI to break the tie 2-1 ballgame. Sara Siteman followed up with an RBI single to push the lead to two.

The numbers…

  • Six Pioneers recorded a hit in game one with Mangiameli leading the way with two.
  • SHU recorded three doubles in the game off the bats of Katelyn Christian, Mangiameli and Lindsey Spitz

Game Two – SHU 4, UMass-Lowell 1 

The Scoring… 

Bottom of the 2nd inning… Fallon Bevino led off the inning with a triple to center field. Hailey Desrosiers drove her in with an RBI single to left field. Two batters later Spitz delivered the two-RBI double to left center field to push the lead to 3-0. Lauren Delgadillo ended the scoring with the RBI single to right centerfield with two outs.

Top of the 6th inning… Cashman got UMass-Lowell on the scoreboard with a home run over the left field wall with two outs in the inning.

The numbers…

  • Orosco recorded her third complete game of the season, allowing just one run on three hits.
  • SHU recorded seven hits for the second straight game with the four through eight spots picking up a hit.

Noteworthy…

  • The Pioneers have recorded an extra-base hit in each of the last eight games.
  • Orosco's 15 strikeouts set a new career-high for the junior right-hander.
  • Prior to the game, SHU honored co-head coaches Pam London and Elizabeth Luckie for coaching milestones reached last weekend. London recorded her 250th  career win as the Pioneers head coach and Luckie registered her 600th career victory.
