Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team was outmatched by Wagner College on Friday afternoon, falling 9-4 in the second game of the Northeast Conference weekend series.

After pitcher's duel through the opening five innings that saw just three combined hits, the Seahawks (14-10, 4-1 NEC) recorded 14 hits to double up the Pioneers (5-14, 1-3 NEC) seven hits at CCSU Baseball Field.

SHU junior Brent Teller and Wagner's Eric Ligda kept both offenses in check after they combined for 26 hits on Thursday afternoon. Teller surrendered just one hit through the opening five while Ligda allowed just two hits.

The Seahawks broke the tie ball game in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits against Teller. The Pioneers traded right back in the bottom half of the inning as a one-out single by sophomore Elijah Brown followed by a double by Stephen Thibault set the Pioneers up. Senior Dan Schock stepped up and delivered the opposite field single to cut the deficit to one.

Wagner's offense continued to attack the Pioneers pitching getting four runs back in the top of the seventh inning off of four hits to put the score at 7-2. Senior Anthony Capozziello recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning for the third SHU run of the game.

A two-out double in the top of the eighth by Anthony Godino capped the Seahawks scoring. The Pioneers threatened with runners on first and third as a passed ball on a strikeout brought in the game's final run.

Six batters recorded hits on the day with the Pioneers top three batters, Brown, Thibault and Schock recording four of them. Teller dropped the decision, striking out six but allowing three runs in five and two-thirds innings. Four pitchers appeared in relief for SHU.

The Pioneers conclude the weekend series against Wagner on Sunday in New Britain. The weekend finale is set for 1:00 p.m.
