Pioneers Drop Midweek Tilt At Fairfield

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University baseball team dropped a midweek contest to crosstown rival Fairfield, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.  The Stags (14-19) used a four-run third inning to pull away from the Pioneers (9-20) at Alumni Diamond.

SHU opened the game with back-to-back singles by freshman Isiah Daubon and sophomore Stephen Thibault. Daubon later scored on a double play to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead. A two-out double by Dan Ryan for the Stags in the bottom of the inning tied things up at 1-1.

The Pioneers broke the tie in the third with a RBI groundout by Dan Schock with runners on the corners and one out. Fairfield jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the third on three hits to go up 5-2.

The top half of the seventh saw SHU load the bases on the first three batters. Co-captain PJ DeFilippo recorded a RBI single for the teams third run. But that was all the Pioneers would get as Fairfield escaped the inning with the bases loaded. A RBI single by Kevin Radziewicz in the eighth capped the scoring at 6-3.

After putting up 15 hits yesterday at Hartford, SHU recorded seven hits on the day from seven different batters.

Four different Pioneers pitched in the second of six games on the week. Freshman Thomas Pinto was handed the loss, surrendering two earned runs in three and two-thirds innings of work.

The Pioneers travel to Bryant for the first road Northeast Conference of the season. The four-game series begins Friday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m.
