Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell to crosstown rival Fairfield 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers (10-24) who served as the home team were unable to counter the five-run fifth inning by the Stags (16-21) at Alumni Diamond.
Fairfield opened the game with a two-out home run by Mitch Williams in the top of the first inning. The Stags added three more runs in the top half of the third inning for the 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Austin Markmann got the Pioneers on the board in the bottom of the third with his second home run of the season. Fairfield then put the game away with five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 11-1 lead.
SHU got two runs in the top of the eighth inning as freshmen Trevor Fagan and Isiah Daubon plated RBI singles. Senior Anthony Capozziello capped the scoring in the ninth with his second career home run for the final score of 11-4.
The Pioneers were outhit 13-6 by the Stags on the day. Daubon was the lone batter to record multiple hits while Markmann added two runs scored.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca suffered his first career loss in the start for the Pioneers, surrendering the first inning home run. Four Pioneers pitched in relief with junior John Cerretani logging three innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits. Junior Hal Shaw finished off the game with two shutout innings of relief.
The Pioneers travel to Mount for a four-game series at E.T. Straw Family Stadium beginning on Friday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.
