Pioneers Blanked In Series Opener At Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team was unable to generate offense, falling to Mount St. Mary's 7-0 on Friday afternoon. The Mountaineers (13-23, 8-10 NEC) held the Pioneers (10-24, 5-9 NEC) to a season-low one hit in the series opener at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

Mount got off to the early lead with a run in the second and third innings. Trey McGough kept the Pioneers hitless over the first three and a third innings before senior Dan Schock lined a single to left field for the lone SHU hit of the game. 

The Mountaineers added three runs in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of early hits and two Pioneer errors to take a 5-0 lead. A two-run home run in the seventh by Patrick Causa capped the scoring at 7-0. 

SHU was held off the run column for the fourth time this season as McGough pitched the complete game shutout. Mount outhit the Pioneers 10-1 in the game with the top two in the lineup recording three hits each. 

Senior James Taubl suffered the loss surrendering four earned runs in six and two-thirds innings. Junior Hal Shaw surrendered just one hit in the final inning and a third.

The Pioneers continue the series against Mount tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
