Box Score TEANECK, N.J.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team used a season-high seven home runs to battle back and defeat Fairleigh Dickinson University 10-8 on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers (11-30, 6-12 NEC) broke the tie game in the top of the ninth with home runs by junior Kyle Oliver senior Dan Schock to take the series opener over the Knights (10-29, 1-18 NEC) at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Seniors Anthony Capozziello and Schock led the Pioneers with two home runs each in the first multi-home run games of their careers. Senior Cody Doyle, freshman Matt Sorrento, and Oliver all recorded home runs in the Pioneers 12 hits in the game.
FDU took control of the game early, capitalizing on three home runs to take a commanding lead 7-0 lead into the fourth inning. SHU got started in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Capozziello, giving the left fielder home runs in back to back contests. A two-out RBI single up the middle by Stephen Thibault kept the inning alive as Schock stepped to the dish. The senior plated a three-run home run over the right-field wall to bring the score to 7-5.
The Pioneers strong hitting continued in the sixth as Sorrento and Doyle hit back-to-back one-out home runs to tie the game at 7-7. The Knights took the lead back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Oliver Tavares to make the score 8-7.
SHU tied things up yet again on Capozziello's second home run of the ballgame with one-out in the eighth inning. The offensive force continued in the Pioneers favor as Oliver led off the ninth with a pinch-hit home run to right field. Schock capped the afternoon with a home run to right center field to bring the final to 10-8.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca closed out the final inning and two thirds for the Pioneers to earn his third win of the season. Freshman Matt Aufiero contributed a scoreless two and third innings of relief.
SHU continues the weekend series with the Knights with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
