Box Score TEANECK, N.J.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team used a five-run opening inning to pull away from Fairleigh Dickinson 7-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers (14-30, 9-12 NEC) picked up the four-game series sweep over the Knights (10-32, 1-21 NEC) at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
The offensive output continued over from yesterday's 15-5 win as co-captain PJ DeFilippo gave SHU the quick lead with a home run to center field just two batters into the game. Junior Kyle Oliver continued the inning with a RBI double to right center field. The Pioneers then loaded the bases before co-captain Cody Doyle recorded a RBI fielder's choice before a Knights error brought the score to 5-0.
Freshman right-hander Ryan LaMay was solid over the first four innings of play surrendering just one hit and one walk. Senior Anthony Capozziello continued his stellar week with his fourth home run of the week in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0. The Pioneers got another run in the seventh as sophomore Austin Markmann recorded the RBI hit by a pitch for the 7-0 score.
LaMay continued his strong outing into the sixth as the Knights finally got on the board with a Jason Fatzinger home run to bring the score to 7-1. The rookie ended his day after the seventh, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight for his first collegiate win. Sophomore Brendan Coffey pitched the final two innings, surrendering a two-run home run in the eighth for the eventual final of 7-3.
SHU outhit FDU 8-6 in the series finale as Capozziello, DeFilippo and redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca recorded multiple hits.
The Pioneers travel to UConn on Tuesday, May 8 for a non-conference matchup beginning at 3:00 p.m.
