Field Hockey Clinches Tournament Berth With 4-0 Win

The Sacred Heart University field hockey team secured a berth in next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament, with a 4-0 win over Wagner College, Wednesday at Johnson Field. The win improves the Pioneers to 5-12 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 1-11 on the season and 0-5 in conference action.

Kayla Kruk led the Pioneers offense with a goal and an assist. Hailey Power made six saves, four in the fourth quarter, to record the shutout.

The Pioneers travel to Rider Friday for an NEC contest at Rider University. The match will begin at 7:00 pm

First Quarter

  • Colleen McAninley gave SHU the opening tally, tipping a pass from Kayla Kruk, into the back of the cage 67 seconds into the match
  • Power stopped the only shot that Wagner put on goal in the quarter

Second Quarter

  • The second quarter was played up and down the field, with SHU recording the only shot of the period

Third Quarter

  • Kruk gave SHU a 2-0 advantage at 41:02, knocking a shot off of the Wagner goalkeeper and into the net
  • 2:30 later, Kelsy Hopkins crossed the ball across the crease and Bridget LaRiccia knocked it in on the opposite post

Fourth Quarter

  • Marlena Koellner made the score 4-0, driving a ball home with 2:17 remaining in regulation
  • Wagner had four penalty corners, and five shots in the final quarter
