TROY, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Wrestling team kicked off the 2019 season this morning as the Pioneers defeated EIWA rival LIU by a final score of 26-12 while falling to Utah Valley 40-3. SHU will return to action on Sunday Nov. 24 when the Pioneers compete at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa.
In the first match against Utah Valley, SHU picked up one win coming from first-year Kyle Randall in the 125 pound weight class winning by a 13-11 decision.
In the second match against LIU, the Pioneers picked up six victories as graduate student Gerard Daly defeated Anthony Dushaj by decision 17-10 in the 141 pound weight division. Junior Nicholas Palumbo picked up his victory in the 149 pound bout defeating Chris Gomez by decision 3-1. Graduate student Brandon Levesque won by fault in the 165 pound bout over Nicholas Provenzano.
Junior Joe Accousti won by decision over Michael Parrish in the 174 bout 8-4 while sophomore Kyle Davis picked up his win over Dan McClure by fault. In the two heavyweight matches sophomore Robert Hetherman defeated Marc Malico by decision in great fashion 11-5 in the 197 bout while sophomore Connor Fredricks wrapped up the victory for SHU by defeating Timothy Nagosky 3-2 by decision in the 285 weight bout.
