Softball Takes First Game of Double-Header With Bryant While Second Postponed Due to Darkness

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- After a late night decision was made yesterday, the Sacred Heart University Softball team played its double-header against Northeast Conference rival Bryant this afternoon taking the first game 12-5 and the second was suspended due to darkness with the game tied up at 5-5 in the eighth inning. No new date has been set yet to continue play. The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday May 4 as SHU will conclude the regular season against Robert Morris. First-pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.

 

Game One 

SHU 12, Bryant 5

The Scoring

Bottom of the 1st inning- The Bulldogs would strike first with a homerun by Kaleigh Goulart to put Bryant ahead 1-0.

Top of the 3rd inning- The Pioneers would tack on seven runs in the third inning, a pair of RBI doubles by Amy Petrovich and Caroline Kruger plus a couple of singles by Hailey Desrosiers and Stephanie Mangiameli would contribute to the Pioneers seven run inning to take a 7-1 lead.

Top of the 4th inning- First-year Brianna Santos would launch a solo homer to left field to put the Pioneers ahead 8-1.

Top of the 6th inning- A two run homer by first-year Amy Petrovich would fire off a two-run homer to right center to put the Pioneers ahead 10-1.

Bottom of the 6th inning- A three run double by Tiffany Bell would tighten the SHU lead to 10-4.

Top of the 7th inning- Graduate student Fallon Bevino would knock in an RBI single to left field scoring in Mangiameli to put the Pioneers ahead 11-4.

Top of the 7th inning- An RBI double by Amy Petrovich would score in Addison Landry to put the Pioneers ahead 12-4.

Bottom of the 7th inning- An RBI groundout by Toni Camarillo would score the Bulldog's fifth run of the game to make the final score 12-5.

 

The Numbers

  • The Pioneers would outhit the Bulldogs 14-6 in the game.
  • At the plate first-year Amy Petrovich would lead the way going 3-5 from the plate with four RBI, two doubles and an home run.
  • In the circle senior Emily Orosco would pick up her ninth win of the season going all seven innings giving up five runs on six hits and striking out five batters.
