Davis Pin Highlights Dual Versus Columbia

The Sacred Heart University wrestling team flirted with an upset of EIWA foe Columbia University, before falling 28-16. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 7-4 on the year and 4-2 in league action, while the Lions improve to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in EIWA competition.

The Pioneers will travel to LIU, 11 a.m., and Hofstra, 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 22, before returning home for Senior Day, Sunday February 23 vs. Brown. That match is set or 4:30 p.m.

125: Sean Faraon vs Joe Manchio; Manchio by major decision 15-0; SHU leads 12-11

  • Manchio took a 2-0 lead with the takedown 1:15 into the match, and just missed earning back points
  • With about a minute left, Manchio earned four back points, for the 6-0 advantage, the lead he took into the second round
  • Late in the second, Manchio earned two points for a reversal, and took an 8-0 lead into the final round
  • Manchio reached 10, with a reversal 40 seconds into the final round, and added four back points as the match ended

133: Kyle Randall vs. Angelo Rini; Rini by Pin (1 – 1:04); Columbia leads 17-12

  • Rini took Randall to the ground about 90 seconds into the match, and earned the pin with 1:04 remaining

141: Gerard Daly vs. Matt Kazimir; Kazimir by Pin (1 – 2:12), Columbia leads 23-12

  • Kazimir took Daly down and quickly earned the pin, 48 seconds into the match

149: Nick Palumbo vs. Val Miele; Palumbo by Decision 10-1; Columbia leads 23-16

  • Palumbo earned a takedown with 58 seconds left in the first round, for a 2-0 lead
  • Palumbo escaped to open the second, and take a 3-0 advantage
  • Midway through the round, Palumbo took Miele down, for the 5-0 lead
  • Palumbo extended the advantage to seven, with a takedown 22 seconds into the final set
  • Miele escaped momentarily, for one, before Palumbo took him right back to the mat, for two 
  • Palumbo also earned the riding time bonus point

157: Shaun Williams vs. Kyle Mosher; Mosher by major decision, 17-0; Columbia lead 28-16

  • Mosher started the scoring with a takedown, 30 seconds into the match
  • Mosher added four back points as the round came to an end, for a 6-0 advantage
  • Mosher escaped from a restart 28 seconds into the second and added two more for a takedown and two back points, for an 11-0 lead with 30 seconds left
  • An early escape in the third and two take down points made the advantage 14-0
  • Back points with 23 seconds left sealed the victory

165: Brandon Levesque vs. Sam Webster; Levesque by Decision, 2-0; SHU leads 3-0

  • Neither wrestler was able to score a point in the first round
  • Levesque earned an escape point, 30 seconds into the second, for a 1-0 advantage, that stood up through the end of the round

174: Joe Accousti vs. Lennox Wolak; Wolak by Decision, 3-2; Match tied, 3-3

  • The first round ended without a point for either wrestler
  • Accousti earned the first point, escaping 10 seconds into round 2
  • Accousti earned a second point for a violation as the second round came to earn end
  • Wolak escaped early in the third, to earn his first point
  • Wolak received two points for stalling, to take a 3-2 lead and earn the win 

184: Kyle Davis vs. Mike Baker; Davis by Pin (1 – 0:39); SHU leads 9-3

  • Baker earned two points for the take down, midway through the first round
  • Davis promptly escaped to cut the deficit in half
  • Davis took the lead with wo for a takedown and then four back points, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage
  • He won the match with a pin, with :39 seconds remaining in the first

197: Nick Fierro vs. Sam Wustefeld; Wustefeld by Decision, 8-3; SHU leads 9-6

  • A scoreless first round was highlighted by Fierro nearly earning takedown points
  • Wustefeld escaped to start the second, and take a 1-0 lead
  • Midway through the second, Wustefeld earned two points for a takedown, for the 3-0 lead that he took to the third set
  • Fierro found his first point with an escape, but Wustefeld answer with a takedown
  • Again, Fierro escaped, making his deficit three, 5-2
  • Wustefeld added three points, two for a takedown, around another escape point for Fierro

HW: Connor Fredericks vs. Dan Conley; Fredericks by Decision, 5-1; SHU leads 12-6

  • Fredericks took a lead 1:20 into the match, with a takedown, nearly flipping Conley onto his back
  • Neither competitor was able to earn a point in the second round
  • Fredericks expanded the lead to 4-0 with a reversal, 20 seconds into the final round
  • With 1:20 left, Conley earned an escape point, but could not find another point
