SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Thanks to
Nicole Guidi's first career hat trick, the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team swept Saint Michael's College after taking game two of the series on Saturday. The Pioneers defeated the Purple Knights, 6-3, to sit second in NEWHA.
SHU improved to 7-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the league, while SMC dropped to 0-9 and 0-8.
First-year
Katie Keenan drilled in the first goal from the right corner of the right circle with help from
Paige McNeil at 8:29 in the first period.
The Purple Knights took a 2-1 lead in the opening period, including a short-handed goal with 7 and a half minutes remaining.
Four minutes later,
Alexa Ocel knotted the score, 2-2, off the stick of
Anna Klein followed the double pass from
Cassandra Nevers and
Sophie Lupone to Guidi for the lead with seconds left in the first.
Saint Michael's evened the board 19 seconds into the second, but Guidi's second shot two and a half minutes later would be the eventual game-winning goal off the assist from co-captains
Kelly Solak and Klein.
Solak would add to the cushion in the final period followed by Guidi's final goal of the night to secure the 6-3 triumph over the home team.
Molly Elmore took command of the cage for the second time this season for an undefeated, 2-0, record. The sophomore goaltender nabbed a career-high 17 saves in her 60 minutes of play.
The Red & White host Post University on November 23 at 1:30 p.m. before heading to UConn to participate in their first Nutmeg Cup on November 26-27.
