SHELTON, Conn. — In the last game before the new year,
Anna Klein had a hand in four of the six goals in the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey triumph over Johnson & Wales on Saturday. The Pioneers topped the Wildcats, 6-0, in the team's sixth shutout of the season as
Frankie Sanchez stood tall in the box for her fifth.
The co-captains opened fire on the visitors during their third powerplay as Klein wiped the 0-0 score off the board eleven and a half minutes into the second with help from
Kelly Solak.
Solak and Klein continued to dominate offensively as they set up
Paige McNeil for the second goal with two minutes remaining in the second.
The senior forward Klein tallied her second goal off another short-handed opportunity halfway through the final period to put SHU up, 3-0.
Rachael DeLong padded the cushion for her second goal of the season 34 seconds after Klein's to extend the Pioneers lead, 4-0.
McNeil also patted the home team's stats with another goal midway through the third.
Thirty-six seconds after McNeil's second goal,
Cannady Taleghani battled past the Wildcats for the Pioneers' sixth goal with help from
Elizabeth Jacobson and Klein.
Nicole Guidi and
Katie Keenan both recorded two assists, while
Sophie Lupone,
Kennedy Spiering each added one.
The offense wasn't the only strength for the Red & White as the defense denied JWU a shot for the first seven minutes and held them to only 14.
Johnson & Wales failed four powerplay opportunities and were held to only four shots in the six-on-five.
Sacred Heart has a month off before resuming action at Yale on January 4, with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
