MADISON, NJ — The Sacred Heart University men's fencing program competed at Drew University, splitting the rounds with 14-13 victory and a 11-16 defeat on Sunday. Domenic Bartolo went 5-1 in his six saber bouts of the day, followed by teammate Vijay Ganta's 4-2 record.
Round 1:
- SHU took the first round with a close 14-13 win over the Rangers.
- The Pioneers won 6-3 in the epee, with Troy Kapitzke, Cameron Silver and Luke Fenwick each adding two points in their three bouts.
- Drew took six of the nine bouts for the victory, where the Pioneers tallied three aided by Lawrence Tan's two wins and Trent Miller's single team point.
- Bartolo led the team in its 5-4 victory with all three bouts won, assisted by Ganta's two tallies.
Round 2:
- Drew came back to win the second round 16-11.
- The Rangers dominated the nine epee bouts, earning seven points, with the Pioneers two credited to Kapitzke and Silver.
- SHU defeated Drew 5-4 in the foil, led by Tan's three points and Miller's two victories.
- Both Ganta and Bartolo contributed two points in the final saber 5-4 loss.
The Pioneers have two weeks until their next meet at Saint Joseph University March 7.
