MADISON, NJ — The Sacred Heart University men's fencing program competed against Drew University in its season opener, falling short with an overall score 2-3 on Saturday. Senior Cameron Silver went for 9-4 in the epee events, while Lawrence Tan racked up an final foil recod of 11-1.Â
Round 1:Â
- Silver (5-2, 4-3, 5-3) won all of his matchups in the epee event, contributing three points in the team's victory, 5-4.Â
- Despite winning by one point (4-5), Juniors Tomas Koeck (5-0) and Petar Janicijevic Agatonovic, (5-0) both shutout their opponent in the foil event.Â
- The Pioneers lost in the sabre 6-3, but first-year Domenic Bartolo (5-1, 5-3, 1-5) came out on top in two of his three faceoffs.
Round 2:
- Silver (5-4, 5-1, 1-5) led the team to awin in the epee with his two for three wins in the round.
- Led by Tan, Koeck and Jancijevic, the Pioneers shut out the Rangers (9-0) in the foil.
Round 3:
- SHU won in the epee (6-3) and foil (7-2) but lost by one point in the sabre event (5-4), garnering the teams second overall win of the night.
- Bartolo denied his opponent a point in the sabre with a 5-0 victory.
Round 4:
- Drew outscored Sacred Heart in the epee (6-3) and sabre (7-2) but the Pioneers came out on top in the foil event (5-4).
Round 5:
- Sacred Heart garnered wins in the epee (5-4) and foil (6-3) events, but fell short in the sabre, 9-0.
