Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, MD.- The Sacred Heart University softball team split its opening games at Mount St. Mary's this afternoon as SHU fell in the first game 3-2 while prevailing in the second in nine innings 8-5.

Score: MSM 3, SHU 2
Of Note
- Neither side would get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning when an RBI single through the left side would give Mount the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning.
- SHU would take the lead back though as junior Alyssa Gonzalez launched her 10th home run of the season to put SHU ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth.
- But a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh innings would score two runs to give Mount the eventual 3-2 victory.
Game 2
Score: MSM 5, SHU 8 (9 innings)
Of Note
- Much more action would occur in game two as a solo home run by Mount St. Mary's in the bottom of the third would kick off the scoring with the Mountaineers leading 1-0.
- SHU answered right back with a run-off a fielder's choice by Grace Saad to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
- Mount responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning though to take a 4-1 lead off a home run, double and single.
- SHU began a rally in the fifth inning beginning with an RBI double by junior Amy Petrovich to left field scoring in senior Caroline Kruger to narrow the Mount lead to 4-2.
- Then Gonzalez followed with an RBI single down the left-field line scoring Petrovich from second to cut the Mount lead to just one.
- Before the closing of the inning, first-year Emily Carroll fired off her fifth home run of the season to give SHU a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth inning.
- In the seventh inning, Mount would come back to tie the game up at 5-5 off a home run by Tori Bowles sending the game into extra innings.
- Neither side would be able to score until the top of the ninth inning when Gonzalez fired off her second home run of the two games scoring in three runs to lead to the Pioneers 8-5 victory.
