SHELTON, Conn. — Forty-three seconds in the opening period, co-captain
Kelly Solak drills in the eventual game-winning goal in the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey, 4-1, triumph over Post. The senior was assisted on the powerplay goal by
Nicole Guidi and
Alexa Ocel on Friday.
The Pioneers improved to 11-10-1 overall and 6-4-1 in NEWHA, while Post dropped to 5-17-0 and 2-9-0.
In the second period,
Kerryn O'Connell and
Paige McNeil padded the lead with two more goals to put SHU up, 3-0. First-year
Megan Gates tallied her second assist against Post this season off the O'Connell shot with additional support from
Erin Fleming. Ocel also nabbed her second assist with help from co-captain
Anna Klein off the stick of McNeil's short-handed goal.
For her second assist of the day, Fleming set up
Charlotte Huntington for the final Red & White goal in the third period.
The home team wiped the goose egg off the board with three and half minutes remaining in the final period off an uneven-strength goal.
Between the posts,
Frankie Sanchez snatched 18 saves for her second-highest save percentage of the season, .922.
Sacred Heart's originally slated game two of the series with the Eagles on January 29 has been moved to January 31 at noon.
