SHU GAME NOTES
The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Team opens a season of celebrations this Friday, Oct. 7, when it travels to No. 16 Providence College for a 7 p.m. puck drop airing live on ESPN+ from Schneider Arena. The Pioneers, who are celebrating their 30th season during the 60th anniversary of the university, open their first on-campus venue, the Martire Family Arena, this winter. Friday's game against the 2015 national champions from Hockey East is also the season opener for the Friars.
SERIES
This is the sixth meeting between Providence and SHU and the Friars have a 4-0-1 edge. The Pioneers, who went 2-3-1 vs. Hockey East squads last winter, last skated against PC in 2018, a 2-2 OT tie at Webster Bank Arena. The four other meetings were at Schneider Arena in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2012. PC has outscored SHU 30-9 overall.Â
PIONEERSÂ
SHU, which won both pre-season games last weekend, got goals from three different players and 27 saves from
Justin Robbins in a 3-2 win at UMass before coming home to beat Western Ontario 6-4 behind tallies from six players and 19 stops from
Luke Lush. The Pioneers, who go from 2021 NCAA champion UMass to 2015 Frozen Four winner Providence this week, had two-goal weekends from sophomore defenseman
Conner Hutchison and rookie forward
Chikara Hanzawa, while senior forward
Kevin Lombardi chipped in a goal and two assists. SHU, which finished fifth in the AHA standings last winter, are picked second this season.
FRIARS
Providence, which also had a pair of pre-season contests last weekend, beat Western Ontario at home 5-2 last Friday and then fell 4-2 at Quinnipiac. The Friars finished the 2021-22 campaign seventh in Hockey East and are picked fourth in the pre-season poll. The Friars rank fifth among NCAA schools with 86 goals returning from last season, which includes their top seven scorers from last winter.

The SHU new roster includes 15 forwards, 11 blueliners and four goalies, as well as players from eight states and four countries. There are four graduate students, nine seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and seven first years among the 29 players.Â
