WEST POINT, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University men's tennis team made an outstanding effort at the ITA Regional Championships, which took place at Army this weekend. The Pioneers posted five singles victories and just narrowly missed advancing a doubles team to the quarterfinals.
Junior
Lefteri Apostolou posted a straight-set victory over Quinnipiac's Gaurav Mootha, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round of singles. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela native then defeated Bryant's Ryan Fu, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 64 on Saturday afternoon. Apostolou ended play in the round of 32 with a straight set loss to Dartmouth's Hikaru Tekada, 6-3, 6-2.

Alberto Mello reached the round of 16 of the doubles event. After earning a first round bye, the Pioneers duo were impressive with a dominating 8-3 win over Quinnipiac's Ayato Arakaki and Donovan Brown. In the round of 16, Apostolou and Mello came up just short in advancing to the quarterfinals with a close 8-7 (7-2) loss to Fairfield's Jonathan Olive-Blanco and Keean Shah.
Sacred Heart returns to the courts at the Wesleyan University Invitational, set to take place the weekend of Oct. 14-16.
