Sacred Heart Falls to Iona 13-11

Werlau led Pioneers with season-high seven goals

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team's effort was not enough as it fell to Iona, 13-11, in its home contest on Wednesday.

Lydia Werlau flicked the ball into the net off the assist from Emma Kittredge at the 12:27 mark to spark a 3-0 scoring run that gave Sacred Heart the 3-1 advantage. The Gaels notched another goal before Werlau posted one off the assist from Grace Reinold. The Pioneers would take the 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Werlau prompted another 3-0 run as she recorded a hat trick at 10:30 mark to extend Sacred Heart's lead to 7-4. Both teams traded goals in the final six minutes as the Pioneers held an 8-6 lead at halftime.
 
The momentum shifted at the 10:48 mark of the third quarter as the Gaels went on a 5-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter to give the visitors a 12-9 advantage.
 
Werlau posted two-straight goals to make it a one-point game with 3:46 remaining. Unfortunately, that would be the final scoring opportunity for the Pioneers as the Gaels added a late insurance goal.
 
Werlau finished with a season-high seven goals. Reinold notched two goals and matched her career-high two assists.
 
Iona had a 39-23 advantage in shots, with goalkeeper Bella Beaton making 15 saves.  The Gaels also picked up 17 ground balls, to the Pioneers' 11.
