Sacred Heart Falls In 9-8 Heartbreaker at Wagner

Bella Beaton tallied a career-high 21 saves

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker in its Northeast Conference road game, 9-8, at Wagner on Wednesday.

Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Emma Kittredge and Grace Reinold
 
At the start of the second quarter, Wagner got on the board before Lydia Werlau scored to give the Pioneers the 3-1 lead. The Seahawks responded with five unanswered goals that stretched into the 10:39 mark of the third quarter to take the lead, 6-3.
 
The Pioneers trailed by three at the 3:23 mark in the third quarter when Kelly Nolan sparked a 4-0 run. The run bled into the fourth frame and helped SHU regain its advantage with 9:39 remaining, 8-7.
 
Werlau's back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter were all the Pioneers would get as Wagner tied the game at 6:10 before netting the game-winner at 1:07.
 
Wagner proved to be the aggressor as it outshot Sacred Heart, 42-16, which led to the 5-1 second quarter. The Pioneers also committed 18 turnovers compared to the Seahawks' seven.
 
Werlau led the Pioneers with three goals while Nolan and Reinold notched two. Goalie Bella Beaton recorded a career-high 21 saves.
