Pioneers Drop Doubleheader Against Merrimack

John Greene records his first career hit and brought home his first Pioneer.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell in both games of its doubleheader against Merrimack. The Pioneers dropped a narrow 5-4 contest in game one and lost 18-6 in the second matchup on Friday.

Of Note:
After the Warriors scored in the first inning, Robert Farruggio's double down the right-field line brought home George Sutherland and Justin Jordan in the bottom of the first.

Two frames later, Merrimack knotted the game at two apiece before tallying a pair in the fourth.

Two singles in back-to-back at bats by Justin Levito and Jordan allowed Dante D'amore and Joey Skarad to cross the plate for a 4-4 tie.

Merrimack snapped the tie for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth. Off an overthrown ball to first by the third baseman for the final out, the Warriors scored the last run of the game.

Sutherland and Farruggio landed on base in each at bat as they both hit two of three with a walk.

Sutherland crossed home once, while Farruggio brought in two Pioneers.

The visitors outhit the Red & White 11-9. Merrimack stranded 11, while six Pioneers were left on base.

Of Note:
Coming in as shortstop in the eighth inning, John Greene recorded his first collegiate hit with a double down the right field line.The sophomore recorded a hit in both of his at bats and brought home Trevor Fagan with a single to centerfield for the final run of the game in the ninth.

Merrimack put two on the scoreboard in the opening frame before remaining hot with an 11-run second inning.

After a failed pickoff attempt of Sutherland at first base, the graduate student advanced to second before rounding third off the overthrown ball in the first inning. Farruggio put the Pioneers on the board after he capitalized on the off-target throw by the pitcher.

Fagan's sacrifice fly to left field allowed Farruggio to score his second run of the game in the third inning.

The home team chipped away at the deficit as Joe Emerson scored in the sixth and Ryan Trieste came home one frame later. Emerson came home from a single to centerfield by Levito, while Trieste capitalized off a sacrifice fly by Michael Hernandez.

The Warriors padded their lead with four more runs across the third and fifth innings.

Sutherland and Levito both went 3-3 at the dish.

Sacred Heart outslugged the visitors 17-16. The Red & White left six on base and Merrimack deserted a dozen.
