McNicholas & Bartnett each win two events
MILFORD, Conn. – Saturday's Northeast Conference women's swimming and diving meet came down to the final race. Sacred Heart University pulled through in the 200 freestyle relay to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn, 150-149, at McCann Natatorium.
Going into the final race, Sacred Heart held a 144-138 margin. Even though the Terriers won the relay, the Pioneers placed second and third to secure the extra point needed for the team triumph.
Sacred Heart finished first and second in both diving events. Olivia McNicholas won the five-diver voluntary event with a score of 180.30 then took the six-dive optional at 231.30. Regan Santoro was second in the five-dive while Natalie Carbone took runner-up in the six-dive competition.
Also winning twice was senior Kelly Bartnett. She took the 100 backstroke in 1:00.41 then led a 1-2-3 SHU finish in the 100 freestyle. Ash Ayla was just off her season best time in the 100 back as she recorded a second-place time of 1:03.29.
Bartnett's winning freestyle time of 55.12 was just 0.14 ahead of Emma Davis while Hyzell Lim hit the wall in third. Davis was third in the 50 free, coming in just behind teammate Emma McCall. McCall placed second in the 100 butterfly.
SHU swept the backstroke events as Casey Barrett posted a winning time of 2:11.48. She also finished second in the 200 free. Picking up a victory in the 200 butterfly was Melanie Sanchez as she touched in at 2:14.23.
The Pioneers swim their last dual meet of the season on February 4 when they host Merrimack at 12:30 for Senior Day.
