Torticill Leads SHU Past Navy

Reese Torticill scored two tries to lead the Pioneers
ANNAPOLIS, Md.— First-year Reese Torticill scored two tries to lead the Sacred Heart University women's rugby team to a 14-11 victory over Navy on Saturday morning in National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) action. The Pioneers improved to 4-1 on the season, while Navy dropped to 2-4.
Torticill scored early for the Pios, taking a quick 5-0 lead 3:30 into the game. Junior Alyssa Cunningham had a good conversion to add two more points to the lead, 7-0.
Navy was awarded a penalty kick at 7:35 and were able to get three points on the board and chip away at the SHU lead, 7-3.
Torticill added another try to extend the SHU lead, 12-3 at 41:20. Cunningham added two more points for the Pios with another good conversion, giving SHU a 14-3 advantage.
Navy started to inch their way back with a try at 48:50, making it 14-8. The Mids were awarded another penalty kick at 58:55 and were able to add three more points, 14-11, but the Pioneers were able to hold them off and maintain the lead for the road win.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Friday, October 27, at 6:00 PM at home against LIU to close out the regular season.
