Pio first year nabs second conference honor

SOMERSET, N.J. — For the second time this season, Sacred Heart University women's cross country first year Grace DelGiorno was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
DelGiorno earned the conference award following a top-20 finish at the 55th-annual Codfish Bowl XC meet, finishing the five kilometer course in a season-low 19:46 as the Pios finished fourth out of 12 teams. SHU was led by junior Kelly Parker, while junior Grace Sousa and senior Keegan Pepin rounded out the team's top four finishers at the meet.
The native of Morris Plains, N.J., has scored in every meet this season for the Pioneers and racked up her first conference honor in the inaugural week of voting after placing 26th at the Marist Invitational. Her time of 20:15 was good for a third-place team finish and placed her ninth out of all first year harriers at the Invitational.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, October 7, racing at the 111th New England XC Championships in Boston. The women's 5k race begins at noon while the men's 8k is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. More information can be found at sacredheartpioneers.com.
