Student-Athletes Organized Successful Collection
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – When families in Bridgeport need help, Sacred Heart students are there to make a difference.
SHU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped collect and deliver 1,693 canned goods to members of the St. Charles Parish of Bridgeport last week as part of the Northeast Conference's SAAC Initiative.
"We choose to partner with SHU's Office of Community Engagement each year to donate all canned goods towards the Interfaith Service that was held on Nov. 15 in the University Chapel," said Jack Pinto, SHU's Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services.
Fencers David Belluomo and Leonardo Cruz Zurita delivered the honorary gifts during the service, while football, men's lacrosse and men's wrestling helped move the canned goods from the service to the trucks to be delivered.
There was also a monetary donation from the SAAC through an Interfaith Bingo Night called "Ending Hunger Games." They raised over $500 for turkeys to be purchased for local families in need.
