Pioneers Hit the Road to Take on Iona

SHU men's basketball will hit the road for a Friday night game

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Fresh off its 95-51 season-opening victory, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team hits the road on Friday to take on Iona at 7:00 PM. The two teams faceoff for the first time since 2006.

Last Time Out:
  • SHU opened the season on Monday evening at home with a 95-51 victory over Sarah Lawrence. Nico Galette (24 pts) led five Pioneers in double figures and Alex Sobel recorded a double-double in his debut for Sacred Heart. Joey Reilly (11), Raheem Solomon (11), and Raymond Espinal-Guzman (10) rounded out double-figure scoring for SHU.
  • Tanner Thomas led the Pioneers in rebounding with 14, while Sobel was right behind with 10. Sobel and Galette both tallied two blocks apiece, and Joey Reilly had a team-high in both steals and assists, with five. 
  • Four athletes made their first appearance for Sacred Heart; Sobel, Kyle McGee, Daniel Bublil, and Chris Nana, all saw time for the Red & White. 
  • The Pioneers had 47 points from the bench, scored 20 second-chance points, and scored 27 points off turnovers.
 
Opening Tip:
  • Sacred Heart and Iona meet for the third time in series history. The teams are even at 1-1 with the last meeting coming in 2006. Prior to that, the first meeting was in 1981. 
  • SHU opened the season on Monday evening at home with a 95-51 victory over Sarah Lawrence. Galette led five players in double figures with 24 points and Sobel recorded a double-double in his debut as a Pioneer.
  • The Pios were selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Galette and Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team. The duo earned All-NEC first and third-team honors last season, respectively.
  • Galette, Reilly, and McGee were voted captains of the 2023-24 squad, by the team.  
  • Galette brought in three postseason honors last season, earning all-conference, all-region, and all-met accolades.
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina enters his 11th season at the helm. Kyle Steinway was promoted to Associate Head Coach, and Tom Barrett and Anthony Richards joined the staff, both in the role of Assistant Coach.
