Pios Earn First Victory of Season Against UNH

Werlau has career day with season-high seven goals

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team showed valiant effort through 60 minutes to earn its first win of the season against New Hampshire, 14-8, on Wednesday.

Of Note
Sacred Heart started the contest out strong, taking a 4-0 lead that stretched into the first three minutes of the second quarter.
 
After New Hampshire flipped the ball into the net for its first goal, senior Emma Kittredge found junior Kelly Nolan on the back cut, sparking a 3-0 run to extend the Pioneers' lead, 7-1. 
 
The Wildcats tallied the next four goals to cut the deficit within two at the 9:46 mark of the third quarter. Graduate student Lydia Werlau posted back-to-back points while graduate student Grace Reinold added another to keep the Pioneers in front, 10-5.
 
Werlau, who broke the school record for career goals at Iona last week, scored three of SHU's four goals in the fourth quarter to earn the victory today and now has 149.
 
The Pioneers outshot the Wildcats 35-19 and 22-14 in between the pipes. SHU also was dominant on the defensive end, causing a season-high 11 turnovers while picking up 22 ground balls. 
 
Werlau finished with a season-high seven goals which was one point shy of her career-high.
 
Reinold and first year Maggie Araneo notched two goals. Graduate student Claire McElhenny posted a season-high three caused turnovers along with four ground balls.
 
Junior Juliana Henry picked up her first win as goalkeeper and collected eight saves.
