Pioneers Fall to UNC in First Round of NCAA Tournament

SHU fell to the defending National Champions, North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell 16-5 to the fourth-seed University of North Carolina on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Maggie Araneo and Lydia Werlau scored a pair of goals each for the Pioneers.

Of Note:
After trailing 4-0 in the opening quarter, the Pioneers sticks came alive in the second quarter. First-year Maggie Araneo and sophomore Shae Insinga scored back-to-back goals to get Sacred Heart on the board to cut the deficit to 4-2 within the opening four minutes of the second quarter. North Carolina put away the next two before graduate student Lydia Werlau added another for the Pioneers at 5:22 in the second quarter to cut the Tar Heels lead in half, 6-3. UNC tallied on more to claim a 7-3 lead at the half.

The Tar Heels scored the opening goal of the third quarter, but Araneo answered with her second of the day to cut the Pioneers' deficit in half, 8-4. North Carolina scored the next three goals to extend their lead 11-4 heading into the fourth.

UNC would go on to score the next three goals, taking a 14-4 advantage in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter. Werlau put away her second goal of the day at 6:28 for the final goal of the day for the Pioneers. The Tar Heels scored the final two of the day to take the 16-5 final and advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sacred Heart wraps up a historic season with its first appearance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament after capturing the program's fourth Northeast Conference Championship.
