Both squads set to compete at Marist College opener
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University men's and women's cross country squads begin the 2023 season this Saturday, September 2, at the Marist College Season Opener. Saturday's meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
"We're coming off of the best preseason's we've had in the past few years," said head coach Christian Morrison. "We're optimistic that our men and women will be able to record improved team performances in our bigger meets this year."
The Pioneers hit the road for all six of their scheduled regular season races this season, opening the 2023 slate with a pair of contests in New York. After the season-opener at Marist, SHU heads to Brookville, N.Y. for the LIU Fall Festival (9/9), marking the first of its two appearances at that course as the Pios will return to Long Island later this season for the NEC Cross Country Championships (10/28).
Sacred Heart returns the bulk of its squad from the 2022 season with 17 men's and 25 women's team members suiting up for another year, including all seven captains. Senior Kevin Martin and juniors Jordan Leon and Kevin Martin will lead the men's side while graduate student Angela Kaiser will lead the women's team alongside Isabella Rogler, Keegan Pepin and Jessica Pigott.
Kaiser returns having finished in the top-30 at the NEC Championships last season as the women's team placed seventh overall. On the men's side, SHU brings back top NEC Championship finishers in Martin and sophomore Matt Vene as the men's team also placed seventh overall.
"Most of our key performers are healthy right now, and that's another reason to be optimistic about the season ahead," said Morrison.
The Pioneers also welcome in 22 newcomers to the squad including graduate transfer Edward Tristine, who comes to SHU having ran cross country as well as track & field at Boston College the past four years. The Pioneers added nine first years on the men's side and 12 first years on the women's squad.
SHU hits the middle of its six-meet schedule with a string of two meets across three weeks in Boston, making an appearance at the 55th Annual Codfish Bowl on September 23 before finishing the Boston swing with at the New England Championships (10/7).
The Red & White conclude the regular season with their longest trip of the season, heading to Saint Albans, Vt., to race in the Fall Foliage Invitational hosted by the University of Vermont (10/15) before heading to nearby New Britain, Conn., to race in the CCSU Mini-Meet (10/20).
