New York native earns team's first conference award

SOMERSET, N.J. — Sacred Heart University men's cross country first year Nick Barbaro has been named NEC Rookie of the Week in the 2023 season's inaugural awards release, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
Barbaro, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., was one of three first year runners who scored for the Pioneers at last weekend's Marist Invitational, finishing the six kilometer race with a time of 20:09, placing him third on the team and 34th overall. Barbaro placed 15th among the 43 first year runners that participated.
SHU opened the 2023 season with a fourth-place finish at the Marist Invitational with a team score of 115, finishing just five points behind Siena who placed third, as well as Iona and hosts Marist.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend on Saturday, September 9, as they travel to Brookville, N.Y., to race at the LIU Fall Festival. Live streaming will be made available at necfrontrow.com, while race results will be available on sacredheartpioneers.com.
