Women’s Basketball Travels to Saint Francis for Monday Showdown

The Pioneers and Red Flash are set to tipoff at 7 p.m. at SFU’s DeGol Arena

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team hits the court again on Monday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. for a road Northeast Conference (NEC) clash against Saint Francis at the DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa.

OPENING TIP
  • Monday's meeting will mark the 50th all-time clash between the Pioneers and Red Flash.
  • SHU holds a 28-21 lead in the all-time series against SFU, winning both games last season by a combined 47 points. 
  • Sacred Heart opened its Northeast Conference (NEC) slate on Saturday with a convincing 65-51 home win over Merrimack in a battle of the top two teams in the NEC preseason poll. 
  • The Pios forced 32 turnovers by the Warriors, which marked a new season high for SHU. Sacred Heart tallied a season-best 19 steals as a team, with Amelia Wood pacing all players with four. 
  • Ny'Ceara Pryor led all scorers with 20 points, her sixth 20-point outing of the season. She also added four assists, three rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes.
  • Sierra Johnson was next on the team with a season-best 15 points, one shy of tying her career high. 
  • First year forward Nalyce Dudley came close to recording her second double-double of the season with nine points and seven rebounds. She also finished with a season-high three steals.
DEFENSIVE PROWESS 
For the second straight game, the Sacred Heart defense was excellent in a home win for the Pioneers. SHU forced a season-high 32 turnovers against the Warriors on Saturday. The Pios had not forced 30+ turnovers since causing 33 against Saint Francis on Feb. 9 of last season. As a team, SHU recorded a season-best 19 steals, with Amelia Wood tying her career-high with four to pace all players. Wood was one of seven Pioneers to finish the game with multiple steals. 

SEASON HIGHS AGAINST THE WARRIORS
A handful of Pioneers tallied new season highs in Saturday's victory over the Warriors. A. Wood (4), Nalyce Dudley (3), Tucker (3) and Kelsey Wood (2) all set new season highs in steals. Sierra Johnson and K. Wood both finished with new season highs in scoring with 15 and seven, respectively. Johnson also set new single-game career marks with seven made field goals and 15 field-goal attempts.

SCOUTING THE RED FLASH
SFU is 2-12 coming into Monday's contest, fresh off topping Wagner, 64-54, in its NEC opener on Saturday. Sophomore guard Destini Ward led the way for the Red Flash with a game and career-high 19 points. Kendall Carruthers, Saint Francis' leading scorer this season, scored 13 points and added six rebounds. Carruthers averages 11.1 points per game and is second on the team with 2.1 assists per game. Both of SFU's wins this year have come at home at the Red Flash's DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa. Saint Francis' other win came against Morgan State, 69-59.  

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SAINT FRANCIS
Monday's bout will mark the 50th all-time meeting in the long-time series between the Pioneers and Red Flash. SHU holds a 28-21 lead in the series, winning the last two contests. The Pios won both games last season by a combined 47 points, taking the second matchup by a 34-point margin, 68-34.
