Women's Rugby Cruises Past Navy, 53-19

Six different Pioneers scored
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team cruised to a 53-19 victory over Navy at home on Saturday morning. Six different Pioneers scored in the victory, as SHU improved to 2-3-1 on the season.
Reece Woods, Alyssa Cunningham, Sarah Gray, Caitlyn Caldon, Erin Croke, and Caroline Woelfel each scored for the Pios. Cunningham had three conversions and a pair of successful penalty kicks while splitting the kicking duties with Caldon, who also had a trio of conversions.
Sacred Heart quickly opened the scoring, just under a minute into play, with a try from Woods and a good conversion from Cunningham to take an early 7-0 lead. The Pioneers continued to dominate throughout the opening half. Caldon scored to put SHU ahead 12-0, and Cunningham scored the next 10 points, making the conversion, penalty kick, and then scoring a try to give the Pioneers a 22-0 advantage. Caldon made her first conversion of the day to add two more for SHU. A try from Gray and a good conversion from Cunningham gave Sacred Heart a 31-0 edge at the half.
Navy was able to get on the board first in the second half, with a try and good conversion to cut the deficit to 31-7. It didn't take long for SHU to answer as Cunningham scored her second try of the day, and Caldon made her second conversion to jump back up 38-7. Croke added one more try for SHU, and Cunningham made her second penalty kick to put SHU ahead 46-7.
Navy added another try with just under 15 minutes left in the game but did not make the conversion, trailing 46-12.
Woelfel scored her first career try in the final 11 minutes to put SHU ahead 51-12, and Caldon made her final conversion to get the Pios to 53. Navy scored in the final few minutes, but the Pioneers had put the game away early and took the 53-19 final.
Sacred Heart will return home in two weeks for senior day, on Saturday, Nov. 2, to take on Quinnipiac at 11 am.
